What We Did Not Expect

For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.  Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

Isaiah 64:3-4

Cave in Rock

What an incredible passage, so full of promise!  How many times do we dream small and expect little when God is dreaming big and expecting much?  It’s easy to trust God when things are going well, or when something we’re hoping for comes together quickly.  But when we’re struggling or that thing we’re hoping for seems to be delayed our faith is challenged.  More specifically, our trust that God will come through for us is challenged.  We invest our energy into worrying, planning, and what-if-ing and then at just the right moment, God moves and everything comes together in a way that is even better than we could have imagined.  That’s what these verses promise; that if we wait for Him to do things His way and in His time, He will act and move on our behalf.  And when He does He will do awesome things that we could have never anticipated were possible.  You know, it’s funny.  How many of us invest our energy in worrying and stressing, which gains us nothing?  All that mental and emotional energy yields nothing but distress and anxiety.  Talk about a bad investment!  If we would only invest in spending time with God, trusting in His promises and just resting in Him exactly where He has us at at this moment, we could experience so much more of the abundant peace and joy that He wants us to have.  I hope this week you can wait with joy for the awesome things God has in store for you!
