Dry Bones

He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”  I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”  Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!  This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.'”  –Ezekiel 37:3-5

Being spiritually dry can feel a lot like the dry bones referenced in these verses.  Our belief in God has not changed and our faith in Him remains strong, but there is a lack of enthusiasm and energy in our walk with God.  It can sometimes feel as if we are just going through the motions, plodding ahead like cattle.  I think it’s important for us to remind ourselves of a few things when we’re going through a dry season.  1)  This is normal.  Do not adjust your TV set.  Just like the sparks and romantic feelings come and go even in the best of marriages, our enthusiasm level in our journey with God isn’t always going to remain high.  Why?  Because, life happens.  Circumstances happen.  Pain and disappointment happen, and our humanness limits us from being able to rise above these things and maintain never-ending joy.  We get tired and weary, and that’s no surprise or offense to God.  2)  These dry seasons are just that, temporary seasons.  We need to remember that so we don’t allow discouragement to come in and keep us stuck there, or allow ourselves to get resentful about it.  3)  We have no power in and of ourselves to “fix” this issue when it happens.  Nothing we can do will fill that; only the One who pours out His living water can quench our parched spirits.  So spend time with Him, and make it time you can soak in His presence.  Find a quiet spot in your home, crank up your favorite worship music and decide that you are going to worship until you feel something.  Spend time in prayer just praising Him and thanking Him for His goodness.  The Lord inhabits the praises of His people, so when we pray and worship, just the mere act of staying in His presence will impact us.  We cannot walk away from His presence unchanged!

Press in this week if you’re feeling dry.  Ask God to pour His living water on your dry bones and see if your spirit comes back to life.
